This story was written before College Dreams became Project Youth+.

I’m a junior at Eagle Point High School and I work with Erica from College Dreams. I’ve been working on mechanical projects and welding with my stepfather since middle school, and I’m interested in underwater welding as a career path. I was looking for work experience beyond fast food, I wanted real welding experience, not just the shop at school.

Erica connected me with Tobin at the Career Build program. He helped me get an internship at Pro-Weld in White City. At first I was just learning the shop, and now they have me welding alongside the actual employees, taking measurements, and going out on field jobs. I work about 15 hours a week at Pro-Weld and kept my other job at Jack in the Box on top of school. Erica helps me stay on track in school while I work, she holds me accountable and makes sure I’m staying in school. I’m taking a lot more classes now and putting in a lot more effort.

I love it at Pro-Weld. They treat me like a real employee, and it’s a great environment to be in. I’ve also started thinking about work options beyond underwater welding, like ironwork, where I could do a lot of different jobs.
